Pecha Kucha Night in Roppongi

Danny Choo at Pecha Kucha Night

I’ve been wanting to go the Pecha Kucha Night in Tokyo since I heard about the concept. They accept presentations on just about any topic, and everyone has just 6 minutes to present a talk with 20 slides. You can talk about whatever you like, but everyone tends to talk about slightly artistic stuff.

Shadows and Flowers

Since it was an anniversary, the 60th time the event had been on in Tokyo, there was a much bigger crowd than they usually have. I didn’t know any of the people who were presenting, except Danny Choo, who came along in his full stormtrooper armour and stood menacingly off to the side for most of the start. He took the helmet off for his presentation, and gave a funny tongue in cheek talk about his photos.

The Crowd at Pecha Kucha Tokyo 60th

The presenters run an architecture firm in Tokyo called Klein Dytham. They introduced everyone in English and Japanese and were pretty tactful about the bad presentations. For  a young architect who looked really nervous, they explained that it’s difficult to present the first time.

Pecha Kucha Organisers

Everyone who presented got a gift of a book. The best presentation I saw was a guy who had combined his two loves, rice and music, and was selling rice in beautifully designed boxes, which could be used to store music when the rice was gone. There were 3 sizes, one that you could use to store CDs, one for singles and a big (maybe 30kg) box that you could keep LPs in. They have a site which is just as beautifully designed.

Faces and Places

There was a photographer who runs a site called Faces and Places, who talked about the portraits he made with amateur models.

I was lucky enough to run into a friend, and he introduced me to some of his buddies. It was a nice night for ¥1000.
